Big, comfortable and cheap to run, if the gearbox and diesel filters are healthy
The B8 Passat (2014-2023) is a roomy, quiet motorway car that scored five stars in Euro NCAP and returns good diesel economy. Its weak spots are the automatic DSG gearbox, the exhaust-cleaning kit on diesels (EGR, DPF and AdBlue) and electronics niggles. A 2.0 TDI 150 with a proven service history is the safest buy. Be careful with short-trip diesels and with automatics that have no gearbox service record.
The Passat B8 is Volkswagen's big family car, sold as a saloon or an estate (Variant) from late 2014 to 2023. It is the same size as an Audi A4 but more practical, with a very large boot, and it is a favourite with people who drive long distances. It sits on the same platform as the Golf and the Skoda Superb, which means parts are plentiful and most independent garages know the car well.
