VOLKSWAGEN
Golf
Mk7 generation, 2012-2020
Our verdict
7.3 / 10
A very good all-rounder if you pick the right engine and gearbox
The Mk7 Golf is comfortable, quiet, safe and easy to sell on. It is not as trouble-free as the badge suggests: the 7-speed DSG automatic, the plastic cooling parts on the small petrol engines and the emissions kit on the diesels are where the money goes. A manual petrol Golf with a full service history is the low-stress buy. A high-mileage DSG or a diesel that only ever did short trips is where first-time buyers get hurt.
The Mk7 is the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf, sold from 2012 to 2020 with a facelift around 2017 (the Mk7.5). It is a five-door family hatchback, with a Variant estate and a few special versions on the same underpinnings, and it is one of the cars you will see most often for sale in Ireland. The idea is simple: a normal car done well. The cabin feels more expensive than the price suggests, it rides quietly on the motorway, and it is easy to drive.
