Roomy, comfortable and well equipped, but be picky about diesels and the gearbox

The QL Sportage is a practical family SUV that owners rate highly and that scored five stars in Euro NCAP. We found no widespread engine-killer, but the evidence for the diesels is mixed: DPF and EGR trouble on short-trip cars, clutch judder, and uneven survey results. Check the service history, test the gearbox hard, and treat warranty cover as something to verify, not assume.

The Sportage QL is the fourth-generation Kia Sportage, made from 2015 and sold in Ireland mainly as a 2016-2021 registration. It is a five-seat family SUV in the same size class as the Nissan Qashqai and Hyundai Tucson, and it shares a lot of its mechanical design with the Tucson (the two come from the same group). It got a mid-life facelift in 2018, which brought updated styling, refreshed engines and, on some diesels, a mild-hybrid system.
