FORD
Focus
Mk3 generation, 2011-2018
Our verdict
6.6 / 10
Good to drive and cheap to fix, but choose the engine and avoid the automatic
The Mk3 Focus drives well, parts are cheap and every garage in Ireland knows it. The risks are concentrated in a few places: the Powershift automatic gearbox, the 1.0 EcoBoost's oil-bathed belts and early overheating recalls, and injector seals on the 1.5 and 1.6 TDCi. A manual car with a documented history is a decent buy; an undocumented automatic or 1.0 EcoBoost is not.
The third-generation Ford Focus (Mk3) was built from 2011 to 2018 as a five-door hatch, estate and saloon, with a facelift in 2014. It was one of the best-selling used family cars in Ireland, and for good reason: it handles better than most rivals, is roomy enough for a small family, and was cheap to buy new. That means there are lots on the market at a wide range of prices.
